It has taken state of the art technology working to fractions of one micron combined with decades of research into the science of bowls performance to create the profiles of Drakes Pride bowls.
Drakes Pride have more experience in the design and manufacture of bowls on computer controlled technology than any other brand.
We understand that the shape contributes most to a great performing bowl and have drawn on our biasing experience, which dates back to 1820, to create the best performing modern day profiles. Working with top ranking players, professors of mathematics, engineering and physics our hugely successful profiles have been created.
No bowls are more accurate and all are produced as perfectly matching sets. The complex formulas and hidden datum points make it impossible to copy these profiles precisely, making sure Drakes Pride remain ahead of the game.
The pride of Drakes Pride
Our history dates back to 1820 in Liverpool, originally under the name Darlington’s. The company’s trade mark is based on the famous bowler, Sir Francis Drake, and were the official testers of the International Bowling Board and Standard Jack makers. The current trade mark is based on the original registered by Darlington’s and Drakes Pride is to be the oldest surviving English bowls business in the world.
The current Drakes Pride was established with the help of Scottish bowler Willie Wood. We introduced the Willie Wood Professional model bowl and had a successful market in New Zealand. The company originally traded as ‘The Clare Bowls Centre’ and was located at 5-11 Springfield, Liverpool in the 1980s. We also introduced another model for slow UK outdoor greens, called the Melbourne model.
Establishing a market in Australia in 1986 through our agent Geoff Beasley who was a South Australia state bowler. He set up state distributors and designed bowls specifically for the high quality outdoor greens in Australia. Don Sherman, a gold medal winner representing Australia, set up a test table in Bendigo, Australia in 1997 which was inspected and approved by the World Bowling Board. In 2012, the Sherman family retired as the Australian agents for Drakes Pride and Fred Ayoub’s business based in New South Wales was appointed to handle the product range.
